The uniqueness lies in how the curriculum has been designed, taught and delivered alongside a world class British curriculum and, more recently, a fully fledged alternative American curriculum pathway based on the Massachusetts Core Standards.
School of Research Science (SRS Dubai) is the educational hub of the Research Science Institute. Established in 1998 initially as a primary school, its mission and curriculum offer caught the imagination of the local Emirati population, after which there was no turning back. Right at the outset, language, heritage and cultural perspective was hugely important to the enterprise. Arabic language, Islamic studies and UAE social studies, has always been the bedrock on which the edifice of the educational programme has been built. The uniqueness lies in how the curriculum has been designed, taught and delivered alongside a world class British curriculum and, more recently, a fully fledged alternative American curriculum pathway based on the Massachusetts Core Standards.
The school rapidly expanded into secondary phase and for many years has been delivering excellent results in IGCSE and A Level examinations. Continuity and progression has been hugely important in the context of an all-through school, from foundation stage to sixth form. Although serving majority Emirati students, the school is very popular for students and families from a wide range of national and cultural backgrounds, hence international and global in its outlook. The bilingual dimension remains the unique selling point of the organisation, and at every level the school draws on the huge strength this fundamental feature provides. Teachers who are experts in the Arabic language work alongside teachers who are experts in the English language. The resulting outcome is very positive and more than the sum of its parts.
Two major concepts drive our work and have enabled us to achieve the world class standards we enjoy today. Firstly, we believe in the critical importance of developing curriculum subjects across all phases of the organisation. We invest in developing and delivering high quality curriculum content by teachers that are experts in the subjects they teach. For us, curriculum expertise and pedagogical expertise go hand in hand. Quality time must be spent in developing a high quality curriculum and subject experts must we well trained to deliver it to a very high standard. Students’ progress is assessed against how much of the curriculum they have learned, hence how much they know and understand. Our aim is always to ensure that core subject knowledge is well embedded in students’ long term memory, so they can apply this knowledge in different contexts, hence become more intelligent.
Secondly, we work on the principle that students’ personal development is of equal importance to their academic development. Hence the provision of a vast amount of in-school and extracurricular opportunities enshrined in the ‘learning without boundaries’ programme. Throughout the year, students also experience the Champions League challenges in every subject, providing many opportunities for them to engage in much welcomed healthy competition. In both areas, academic and pastoral, we have a strong track record of success, making us eminently suitable to deliver a high-quality online languages programme.
We have achieved a large number of prestigious accreditations related to academic subjects and our global outlook. For example, we have achieved world class accreditations for the delivery of our curriculum in maths, English and science. The Green Flag award demonstrates our commitment to the environment and sustainability; the Rights Respecting Award shows our commitment to the values enshrined in the United Nations Charter for the Rights of the Child.
